The AMIR Lab is seeking highly motivated PhD students to join our research team at Illinois Tech. If you have a passion for metal additive manufacturing (AM) and expertise in any of the areas below, we encourage you to apply.
Eligibility Criteria:
✅ US Citizens or Green Card Holders currently present in the United States
✅ Master’s degree in Materials Science & Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
✅ Minimum GPA: 3.4 (on a 4.0 scale)
✅ English Proficiency: TOEFL 95 / IELTS 7.0 (if applicable)
✅ Background in metal AM (Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Binder Jetting, Direct Energy Deposition)
✅ Hands-on experience in:
- Powder characterization used in AM
- Microstructure characterization (SEM, EBSD, TEM, XRD)
- Mechanical testing (tensile, fatigue, creep)
- Corrosion behavior (electrochemistry & high-temperature oxidation)
- In-situ monitoring of AM processes
✅ Computational skills in:
- Phase-field modeling, Machine Learning, FEM, DEM, COMSOL
- Alloy design (CALPHAD, MD simulation, DFT modeling)
- Numerical methods in mechanics of materials for fatigue
✅ Strong communication skills and ability to work independently
✅ A proven track record of peer-reviewed publications
