Do you have a student interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Economics with a focus on applied microeconomics? Then, the University of New Mexico’s Department of Economics might be a good fit!
UNM’s Department of Economics is currently accepting applications to our Ph.D. program for Fall 2026. Applications are due February 1, 2026. All admitted students receive funding for up to five years and we offer a generous funding package that includes a stipend, tuition waiver, and health insurance. We also have many research assistantship (RA) and teaching opportunities for graduate students, creating a well-rounded learning environment.
The Ph.D. Economics program at UNM is student focused and oriented with small cohorts, recently averaging 4-6 students per year. This provides our students with excellent opportunities for meaningful one-on-one interactions with our high-quality research and teaching faculty.
Our program has three field specializations in applied microeconomics: (i) Environmental and Natural Resource Economics; (ii) Public Economics (with a focus on Health Economics), and; (iii) International Development and Sustainability.
Recent graduates of our Ph.D. program have taken jobs at well-respected institutions such as the Princeton University, University of Washington, Whitman College, Colgate University, Michigan State University, and the University of Minnesota, among others.
