Environmental Engineering Graduate Students | Fully Funded PhD Position in Aquatic Chemistry at Texas A&M University
Dr. Garrett McKay, in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Texas A&M University, is seeking multiple PhD students to perform experimental research on dissolved organic matter characterization and photoreactivity.
Research Focus: DOM photophysics and the reactivity of DOM triplet states, as they relate to aquatic photochemistry. Projects remain broad with freedom to design experiments towards the most novel and interesting questions.
Projects:
1. DOM Characterization (NSF-funded): Uncover molecular-scale interactions that explain macroscopic optical and photochemical properties of dissolved organic matter. Study charge-transfer complexes of model organic compounds; characterizing optical, photophysical, and photochemical properties of highly resolved DOM fractions; evaluate impact of photooxidation and microbial transformation.
2. DOM Photoreactivity (NSF-funded in collaboration with University of Colorado Boulder): Characterize the one electron reduction potential of triplet state dissolved organic matter. Uncover molecular classes of DOM triplet sensitizers.
Responsibilities: Perform high-quality laboratory research, analysis, and writing that leads to impactful publications.
