GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP - The University of Alabama in Huntsville
We are seeking a motivated Master's or Ph.D. student to develop cutting-edge machine learning algorithms for challenges in systems and manufacturing science. The successful candidate will design, develop, and validate ML models using heterogeneous datasets, and collaborate with experimental teams to translate those models into robust, production-ready workflows for real-world manufacturing environments.
About the Position:
This is a fully funded GRA position offering a competitive monthly stipend, full tuition remission, and health insurance for the duration of the degree. Additional support for research expenses and conference travel is available. Continuity of funding is contingent upon satisfactory academic progress, research performance, and compliance with university policies.
Qualifications:
Required: A bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field, with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (or equivalent).
Preferred: Experience in statistics, numerical methods, or optimization; a record of peer-reviewed publications; and familiarity with large language modeling (e.g., agentic AI or vision-language model). Strong applicants with demonstrated expertise in computational design and a clear interest in neuro-symbolic AI are especially encouraged to apply.
How to Apply:
Interested candidates should submit a CV and unofficial transcripts to Dr. Cheng Chen at Cheng.Chen@uah.edu. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to complete a questionnaire and a written statement of research interests as part of the formal review process. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
Admission to both the UAH Graduate School and the relevant graduate program is required. Information on graduate admissions can be found at uah.edu/admissions/graduate/apply-for-admission.
About the Lab and University:
Students in this position will join the Integrated Computing Lab (ICL) Lab led by Dr. Cheng Chen. We invite prospective applicants to visit our website to learn more about our research, ongoing projects, and team before applying.
