I am sharing two PhD openings in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Houston for Spring 2027. Rolling interviews have started - early applications are strongly encouraged.
Position 1: Large-Scale Structural Testing & Modeling
Focus on experimental testing and computational modeling of structural elements under shear and torsion. You will work hands-on with the Universal Panel Tester (UPT) in the Thomas T.C. Hsu Structural Research Laboratory - a 54-actuator, 40-ton facility and the only one of its kind in the U.S. and one of only three worldwide. The UPT can subject full-scale 55" x 55" panels to any combination of compression, tension, shear, bending, and torsion.
Position 2: Fluid-Structure Interaction & Marine Energy Systems
Focus on FSI and marine energy systems, combining lab testing with computational simulation. This project involves direct collaboration with industry stakeholders and supports workforce development in the Gulf region.
Ideal candidates have a background in Structural / Mechanical / Ocean Engineering, Mechanics, or related fields with interest in experimental + numerical work.
